Except For Arthur, Of Course (#183)

I made this for you: CAPTAIN SQUARE'S HOMEPAGE
"Sidekick" is very loosely applied to the ninja pal in this latest Captain Square comic, but much in the same way that Arthur was a sidekick to The Tick. He is actually an autonomous crimefighter who chooses to be partnered with a superhero that, unfortunately, is a lot more powerful than he is. The ninja was originally going to be called "Ovoid", but he seems a lot more 3D than he did in the design stages. I'll have to come up with a new name.
Sidekicks are occasionally necessary, but often annoying. When a comic is dialogue-heavy, sidekicks only serve as a second voice for the main character. When it's action-heavy, the sidekick serves as a target for projectiles and a subject of kidnapping. Even if the sidekick is cool, he ultimately will be pitted into the role of plot device.
I don't know if anyone in MSFT counts as a sidekick in the traditional sense, but it DOES seem that the other characters are often secondary to my avatar. Outside of the identified characters (Cthulhu, the Zombie, etc.), anyone else is basically interchangeable. They're kind of like the "anything" muppets from sesame street: arbitrarily thrown together scraps of velcro body parts affixed to a football-shaped head, whose only purpose is to sing backup to Big Bird.
Comic updated 3x a week. Usually.
